Lesson Templates

Standard Pro

Lesson templates let you save a full lesson, with all its blocks, as a reusable template and drop independent copies into any course in your library. They’re useful for lesson patterns you reach for repeatedly: a standard introduction, a recap layout, a branded scenario, or a pre-formatted reflection page.

When you save a lesson as a template, Slate captures the lesson’s blocks. When you insert that template into a section, Slate creates a fully independent copy with fresh content. Editing the inserted lesson does not affect the template, and renaming or updating the template does not change lessons that were already inserted.

Lesson templates are private to your account and available across all your courses. They are not shared with team members.

  1. In Course Overview, hover over the lesson row you want to save
  2. Click the bookmark icon between the Duplicate and Delete buttons
  3. Enter a name for the template. The lesson’s current title is suggested by default
  4. Click Save Template

A toast confirms the save, and the template becomes available the next time you open the From Template picker.

  1. In Course Overview, click Add Lesson at the bottom of any section
  2. Select From Template (the second option, directly under Blank lesson)
  3. The picker opens with a searchable list of your templates on the left
  4. Select a template to see a composition summary on the right showing every block type it contains and how many of each
  5. Click Insert into section

Slate creates a new lesson at the bottom of the section, fills it with copies of the template’s blocks, and opens the lesson editor so you can start editing.

The picker dialog is also where you rename and delete templates.

  • Rename - click the pencil icon next to the template name in the right pane, type a new name, and press Enter or click outside the field to save. Press Escape to cancel
  • Delete - click the trash icon. A confirmation dialog appears. Delete removes the template and any copies you have already inserted are unaffected

When you save a lesson as a template, Slate stores:

  • All blocks in the lesson, including their content, settings, and any nested content (accordion panels, tab items, layout columns, card stacks)
  • The structure and order of those blocks

The template does not include:

  • Narration - audio narration is not carried into the template. Re-generate or attach narration in the new lesson if you need it
  • Translations - templates only capture the source language. Translations are course-specific and stay with the original lesson
  • Assessment configuration - course-level assessment settings (passing score, attempts, randomization, feedback visibility) live on the course, not the lesson, so they cannot travel with a template

For this reason, the bookmark icon is hidden on lessons inside an assessment section. You can save and reuse content lessons; assessment lessons need to be configured at the course level.

Saving a lesson as a template is a structural action that writes to the source course. The bookmark icon is hidden when you have a translation language selected in the language picker. Switch back to the source language to save.

Lesson templates are included on Standard and Pro plans. Free plan users see the bookmark icon and the From Template menu item, but clicking either opens an upgrade prompt instead of the save or picker dialog.

Both types of templates create independent copies on insert and stay private to your account.

Use block templates for individual reusable pieces like a disclaimer, a branded image layout, or a standard knowledge check. Use lesson templates when the whole lesson structure is what you want to repeat.
