Import Courses

Slate’s import dialog accepts three formats: Slate exports, LESSON.md course bundles, and Rise SCORM packages. The format is auto-detected from the zip contents. Import a single course or migrate an entire library.

SourceDescription
Slate exportsRe-import previously exported Slate courses (SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, xAPI, cmi5, or HTML) for continued editing.
LESSON.md bundlesDrop a zip of LESSON.md files and Slate creates a new course. Folders become sections, numbered prefixes order both, and an optional ASSESSMENT.md adds a scored assessment. See the LESSON.md Bundles guide.
RiseImport Rise SCORM exports. Sections, lessons, text, images, interactions, knowledge checks, labeled graphics, and quiz questions all carry over.

Single import - Import one course at a time from the dashboard. Available on all plans (free accounts limited to 5 imports). Handles all three formats.

Batch import - Import up to 25 Slate or Rise SCORM packages at once with progress tracking and batch tagging. Available on Pro plans. (LESSON.md bundles are imported one at a time through the single-import dialog.)

Imported content works like any Slate course. Once a course is in your library, you can:

  • Apply custom themes and brand kits
  • Add new blocks and interactions
  • Translate into other languages using AI
  • Export to any format: SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, xAPI, cmi5, HTML, or PDF
  • Share via tracked links or the review tool

When you import any of the three formats, the import preview shows editable title and description fields. The title is pre-filled from the source (package metadata for Slate and Rise, or the zip filename for LESSON.md) and is required before the Import Course button activates. The description is optional. You can change either later in the course settings.
