AI Lesson Generation

Slate’s AI lesson generation creates a complete lesson inside an existing course. Describe what you want the lesson to cover, and Slate builds it with content blocks, knowledge checks, and interactive elements. Pro

Lesson generation uses a chat-based interface. You describe your lesson topic, and Slate’s AI asks clarifying questions before generating the content.

  1. Open your course and navigate to the Course Overview
  2. Click the + button at the bottom of a section
  3. Select Generate with AI
  4. Describe your lesson topic in the chat dialog
  5. Answer any follow-up questions the AI asks
  6. Review the summary and confirm generation

During the conversation, Slate gathers details to shape your lesson:

  • Topic - the subject matter of the lesson
  • Learning objectives - 1-3 specific outcomes learners should achieve
  • Depth level - how much detail and content to include (see below)
  • Knowledge check - whether to add quiz questions at the end
  • Interactive elements - whether to include accordions, tabs, and other interactive blocks
  • Additional notes - any special requests or specific content to include

You don’t need to provide all of these upfront. The AI will ask about anything it needs.

Choose how detailed the generated lesson should be:

LevelBlocksWord rangeBest for
Overview4-6400-600High-level introductions, quick summaries
Moderate6-10800-1,200Balanced explanations with examples (default)
Comprehensive10-141,500-2,000In-depth coverage with detailed examples

You can upload a document to guide the generation. Slate uses the content from your file to create more accurate, relevant lesson material.

Supported file types:

  • PDF (up to 100 pages)
  • PowerPoint (PPTX)
  • Word (DOCX)
  • Plain text (TXT)
  • Markdown (MD)

Files can be up to 20 MB. Upload source material when you have existing content (training guides, slide decks, reference docs) that should inform the lesson.

A generated lesson includes a title and a mix of content blocks selected to fit your topic:

  • Text blocks with headers, paragraphs, and formatted content
  • Image placeholders with descriptive alt text
  • Knowledge checks (multiple choice, multiple select, or fill-in-the-blank)
  • Accordions and tabs for organizing related content
  • Tables for structured data
  • Flip cards for term and definition pairs
  • Note callouts for tips, warnings, and key takeaways
  • Dividers and layout blocks for visual structure

After generation, the lesson is fully editable. You can rearrange, rewrite, add, or remove any block.

If you’ve set a custom AI prompt in Settings > AI, Slate applies it automatically during the conversation and generation. Your preferences (tone, language, regional context, terminology) shape both the AI’s questions and the generated lesson content.

See Custom AI Prompt for setup details.

Each lesson generation costs 200 AI credits. Credits are deducted when the lesson is successfully generated, not during the conversation phase. If generation fails, no credits are charged.

The chat input is disabled if you don’t have enough credits to generate a lesson. This prevents spending time on a conversation you can’t complete. You can purchase more credits from Settings.
