Tracked Sharing

Tracked sharing creates links that capture viewer information and track their progress through your course, all without an LMS. Use it to distribute training, monitor completion, and collect engagement data.

  1. Open your course in the Slate Builder
  2. Click Publish in the toolbar
  3. Select Share & Track
  4. Optionally name the link (e.g., “Sales Team Q1”)
  5. Configure email settings:
    • Require email - viewers must enter their name and email before accessing the course (on by default)
    • Require email consent - adds an opt-in checkbox for GDPR compliance
  6. Optionally toggle Password protect and enter a password — viewers will need to enter this password before accessing the course
  7. Click Create Link
  8. Copy the URL and share it with your audience

You can also create tracked links directly from the dashboard by clicking the share icon on any course card.

For each viewer, Slate records:

  • Name and email (if email capture is enabled)
  • Progress - percentage of lessons completed
  • Status - Not Started, In Progress, or Completed
  • Assessment result - whether the viewer passed (for courses with assessments)
  • Email consent - whether the viewer opted in (if consent is enabled)
  • First and last access - when the viewer first opened and last visited the course

A viewer is marked as “Completed” when they have viewed all lessons. For courses with an assessment, the viewer must also pass the assessment.

When a viewer opens a tracked link:

  1. If the link is password-protected, the viewer must enter the correct password first
  2. If email capture is enabled, they see a simple form asking for their name and email
  3. If email consent is required, an opt-in checkbox appears
  4. After entering their details, the course loads
  5. Progress is tracked automatically as they navigate through lessons
  6. Returning viewers are recognized and skip the email form on subsequent visits

You can add an optional password to any tracked link. When enabled, viewers must enter the correct password before the course content loads.

  • Toggle Password protect when creating a new link
  • Add, change, or remove passwords on existing links at any time using the lock button next to the link name
  • Course content is never sent to the viewer’s browser until the correct password is verified

Password-protected links show a lock icon in the Share & Track panel.

From the Share & Track panel, you can:

  • View analytics - click any link to see its viewer data
  • Update content - refresh the link with the latest version of your course
  • Manage password - add, change, or remove a password using the lock button
  • Activate/deactivate - toggle a link on or off without deleting it
  • Export data - download viewer analytics as a CSV file

Tracked links display a “Built with Slate” banner. Pro subscribers can share tracked links without Slate branding.

  • Test before sharing - always open your tracked link yourself (or have a colleague test it) before distributing to your audience. Verify the email form, content, and tracking are working as expected.
  • Use an LMS for large audiences - Share & Track is designed for moderately sized audiences like team trainings, department rollouts, and onboarding cohorts. For larger audiences, export your course as a SCORM or xAPI package and deliver it through a learning management system, which is purpose-built for high-volume distribution and reporting.
  • Use descriptive link names - name links after the audience or purpose (e.g., “Sales Team Q1”, “Client Onboarding - Acme”) so you can easily identify them later.

Tracked sharing is available on Standard and Pro plans.
