Single Import
Single import lets you bring an individual course into Slate from a SCORM package. Both Rise exports and previously exported Slate courses are supported.
How to import
Section titled “How to import”- From your dashboard, click Import
- Upload a
.zipfile (the SCORM package exported from Rise or Slate) - Slate automatically detects the source format and parses the package — no media is uploaded yet
- Review the course preview, including section/lesson/block counts and any warnings
- Click Import Course to upload media and add the course to your library
Importing Rise courses
Section titled “Importing Rise courses”When you import a Rise SCORM export, Slate converts the content into native Slate blocks. The course structure (sections, lessons, and block order) is preserved.

Smart conversions
Section titled “Smart conversions”Slate applies intelligent transformations during import:

- Button stacks are converted to multi-column layouts
- Video caption files (VTT/SRT) are detected and mapped to transcript fields
- Empty blocks are automatically skipped
- Rise font styles are stripped so your Slate theme applies consistently
Partially supported blocks
Section titled “Partially supported blocks”Some Rise block types are converted with minor data loss:
| Rise block | Slate conversion | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Process | Accordion | Step progression visual is replaced with expandable panels |
| Timeline | Accordion | Date markers and timeline visual are replaced with expandable panels |
| Scenario | Accordion | Dialogue content preserved, but branching logic and character visuals are lost |
| Button stack | Layout (2-column) | Stack styling is replaced with a column layout |
| Numbered divider | Divider | Number labels are removed |
| Continue | Divider | Navigation gate behavior is removed |
Unsupported blocks
Section titled “Unsupported blocks”The following Rise block types cannot be converted and are skipped during import. A warning is displayed for each skipped block:
- Sorting activities
- Matching activities
- Charts (bar, line, pie)
- Custom HTML blocks
- Draw from Question Bank
Settings preserved
Section titled “Settings preserved”- Restricted navigation - if your Rise course uses restricted navigation, Slate enables locked navigation on the imported course
- Theme color - the Rise course accent color is extracted and applied
- Course logo - extracted and uploaded to your media library
Importing Slate courses
Section titled “Importing Slate courses”Previously exported Slate courses can be re-imported for continued editing. All export formats are supported: SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, xAPI, cmi5, and HTML.
Re-importing a Slate course preserves:
- Full course structure (sections, lessons, blocks)
- All media files (re-uploaded to your library)
- Custom fonts
- Block settings and configurations
Automatic tagging
Section titled “Automatic tagging”Imported courses are automatically tagged based on their source format: slate-import for Slate exports and rise-import for Rise exports. These tags help you filter imported courses on the dashboard. You can remove them like any other tag if you prefer.
Media handling by plan
Section titled “Media handling by plan”During import, media files are uploaded to your Slate media library based on your subscription:
| Media type | Free | Standard / Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Images | Uploaded | Uploaded |
| Videos | Skipped (add a link after import) | Uploaded (up to 250 MB each) |
| Documents | Skipped (add a link after import) | Uploaded |
When a video or document is skipped, the block is kept in your course with an empty source — you can paste an external link (YouTube, Google Drive, etc.) in the editor afterward.
Videos larger than 250 MB are skipped on all plans with a warning.
Free plan import limit
Section titled “Free plan import limit”Free accounts can import up to 5 courses. A counter shows your remaining imports in the upload area. When you reach the limit, an upgrade prompt appears. Paid plans and team members have unlimited imports.
